By the time I heard DJ Rashad's Just a Taste in late 2010 and Grace in 2011, I knew what had changed in me had become more than just a passing interest, more than just a fetishistic, voyeuristic peering into the footwork battles in underground Chicago via the distorted, blown-out, granular videos on. I can't believe this. Rashad was the coolest, kindest person I have ever met. I got to know him while touring with him in Nov-Dec.
Rashad was one of the brightest stars in footwork, shining especially dazzlingly when he started transitioning away from the straight weapon-hood of earlier releases like Just A Taste and into the more melodically coherent worlds of Double Cup and We On 1. I've written about Double Cup before, and it's.
I got a call about this earlier today and I haven't been able to grasp this tragedy. I have a lot to say, and typing this has helped me share some stories and get some tears out. Back in October, When the tour first started, it was just DJ Spinn repping the duo who was opening for Chance.
Spinn was so down and easy to get along with and when I heard his performing partner was about to join up with us I had some hesitations. First off I'd be giving up my spot on the bus and would have to go sleep in the less luxurious RV for the remainder of the tour. And since I didn't know him yet, I thought there was no way that anyone could be as positive a presence as Spinn was. Crack Cadprofi 9.
But Rashad, man, I couldn't think of any one I would have rather gotten to be around and work with. When shit got stressful during a show, nothing could phase him and he'd make sure you could be cheered out of your mood. When shit was going down after the show because someone wanted to get funny and disrespect our traveling family, he'd be the first to knock him out cold. He and Spinn's hotel room door was always open for anyone who wanted to come in and enjoy themselves. It was after a show in Lawrence, Kansas that I first really got to know Rashad. He explained to me why he wasn't on the tour for the first couple weeks. Originally the plan was for him to do a small European tour late October and he would've missed a large chunk of Chance's tour.
But on the way to the airport to leave for Europe he was involved in a car crash that just barely took his life. He was grateful to still be around, especially considering the initial reaction to Double Cup. He shared a few reviews for his album that had just come out, the Rolling Stome and Pitchfork reviews. He was so thrilled to be getting the recognition, but even more so to be out touring with Chance. When we were getting back to the bus later that night, we saw someone creeping around. The dude starts walking away from one of the bays with our sound guy's long board.
Now we had been out all night and we're pretty fucked up, but I have never seen anyone move so fast as Rashad did when he sprinted down to alley to catch this motherfucker after the dude had tried to get physical with the sound guy. That motherfucker got away, and he was lucky for that. It was Fargo, North Dakota that I finally got to see him lay a smack down after another punk tried to get stupid.
